Train pass or individual tickets? Start with your route
A rail pass is a tool for a particular itinerary. Work out the journeys you will actually take before deciding that a pass is better value.
Write the journeys down first
For each travel day, list the origin, destination and approximate time. Separate intercity journeys from local transport. Compare the cost of individual tickets for those journeys with the full pass price, including any compulsory supplements or reservations. Leave hypothetical trips out of the saving calculation.
Check coverage at the operator level
Confirm that the pass covers the exact operator, route, train class and travel days you want. A country-wide product name does not mean every service is included. Read the operator鈥檚 current eligibility rules directly, particularly where a pass is sold only to certain visitor categories.
Understand reservations and collection
Check whether your selected train requires a seat reservation, how that reservation is made and whether any extra payment applies. Find out whether the voucher is the travel ticket or needs exchanging. Record the collection location, opening hours and identification requirements without assuming all ticket products follow the same process.
Check passholder seats before buying the pass
A train appearing in the timetable does not establish that a passholder seat is available. For Eurostar journeys to or from London using an Interrail fare, Eurostar requires an advance seat reservation and a reservation fee; passholder seats are subject to availability. Check the departure you actually need before committing to the pass or non-refundable hotels. If passholder seats are unavailable, compare another departure or a separately purchased ticket rather than assuming your pass will get you aboard. Official guidance checked 3 October 2026; recheck the operator before buying.
Leave room for a disrupted journey
Check refund and change conditions before buying. A fixed departure, a flexible ticket and a pass can have very different consequences when your plan changes. Keep the operator鈥檚 disruption guidance and the booking reference accessible. Review the route and booking experience separately so the next traveller knows which part worked well.
