Compare hotel rates without missing the real cost

TripCritics Planning Desk · Published 3 October 2026 · Updated 4 October 2026 · Research-assisted planning guide, not a first-hand review

A lower nightly rate can become the more expensive stay. Compare the same room, dates and conditions before you choose a booking site.

Build one comparable shortlist

Start with the exact property, arrival and departure dates, room count and the ages of every traveller. Keep the room name, bed configuration and occupancy limit beside each quote. A double room and a twin room are not interchangeable if your group needs separate beds. Photos of a property do not confirm the room category included in an offer.

Calculate the stay total

Use the total for the entire stay, in one currency. Check whether taxes, service charges, resort fees or mandatory property charges are included, payable later or still unknown. List optional breakfast, transfers and parking separately. A refundable quote may be worth more to you than a prepaid quote even when its headline price is higher.

Compare the final payment breakdown

At the last step before payment, record the full amount, the booking currency and anything due at the property. Price-display rules differ by market: current US FTC guidance for short-term lodging requires known mandatory fees in the upfront total while allowing government charges to be disclosed before payment; current UK CMA guidance generally requires unavoidable charges and taxes in the total shown upfront. A compliant offer can therefore be organised differently across markets. Compare identical dates, occupancy and room terms using the final payable amount, and recheck the breakdown before confirming. Guidance checked 4 October 2026.

Read the cancellation line first

Record the cancellation deadline with its local time zone, the penalty after that deadline and any no-show condition. Check when payment is collected and whether the property takes a deposit. Save the rate conditions together with the confirmation; a screenshot of the advertised price alone does not capture the booking terms.

Match the review to your trip

A family review can answer questions about room space and noise. A work-trip review may tell you more about desk space and sleep. On TripCritics, review evidence and the traveller’s feeling serve different purposes: a well-supported negative review can be just as credible as a positive one. Read the actual product and location rather than assuming a provider’s overall reputation describes every hotel.
